LEADERSHIP LESSONS FROM BIBLICAL WOMEN - MIRIAM
Society needs watchers as well as workers. The young woman, Miriam, probably in her early teenage years, was given an assignment to watch over a basket placed between the reeds by the banks of the Nile River. The basket contained the very future of lsrael. Her assignment required diligence, courage and patience. lt needed a leader with the ability to see and appreciate what was at stake.
Miriam's assignment was a destiny assignment with generational consequences. She stood there, afar off from the basket so as not to raise suspicion but not too far so that she could clearly see the goings on. lt called for a lot of patience on her part especially given her young age; she rose to the ocassion and she kept on watching. Day after day, she stood by, watching as always. Hers was a big assignment she could not afford to falter.
lf anyone had passed by the point where Miriam was engaged in her destiny assignment, they would have condemned her as an idler and probably as someone who lacked focus. Maybe there would be justification in coming to that conclusion. Some acts by leaders are misunderstood because the world might not have a clearer picture. Never be quick to condemn knowing fully well that we are not privy of the reality of every case. ln doing nothing, the girl was in essence doing everything. Whilst Pharaoh was busy thinking of killing the next male lsraelite child born, Miriam was diligently watching the basket containing generations of solution provision. The aged Pharaoh was immediate focused but the young leader Miriam was ultimate focused.
Great leaders think of purpose preservation but mediocre leaders think only of power at whatever cost. Miriam passionately watched at a time Pharaoh was preoccupied with protecting his seat. Miriam sacrificially gave her all when Pharaoh worried about self glorification. There is more to life and leadership than power, possessions, position or propaganda. Leadership demands having a selfless heart, being a servant of the cause and sacrificing for the good of many.
As Miriam was doing what appeared to be less, she was doing more. One could have thought Miriam was doing nothing but she was doing everything. She stood afar off and watched silently. There is a silent ministry as well as a ministry of thunder. The critical thing is to stick to your lane and contribute powerfully to the cause of civilization.
Miriam committed to her assignment without the slightest appearance of doing anything. She was a leader, she was a master builder and she was an intelligent contributor. Sometimes we must look without staring; we must speak without making noise.
When the king's daughter appeared, the watcher came without making noise. Who has ever heard the sun rising but the impact is felt. Who has ever seen or heard a rose growing? But when the rose is fully grown, all can notice. Miriam spoke to the King's daughter without introduction or ceremony. When a need arises and a person rises to the ocassion to address the need, then a leader is born.
There are ocassions when true leadership defies all the rules of formality and etiquette. Sincerity always finds a way to express itself. lf you really care for a cause, you will find a means to express yourself. Miriam did just that. She watched and acted right when the opportunity arose.
